Barenaked Ladies Are Whee!!

I went to go see BNL at Hammersmith Apollo last night. It was great show. I have a lot of fond memories of listening to their music throughout high school. The last time I went to one of their concerts was for Maybe You Should Drive in the mid-nineties. However, I kind of lost touch with their new stuff after Rock Spectacle but they demonstrated last night that they could still put on a good show. One thing that impressed me was how tech-savvy the band is. They film every show and put it up on their website and frequently blog about their experiences (like we do!). The coolest new trick that they have at their disposal is selling memory sticks with songs and video on them. The neat thing that they do with those sticks is that they will immediately upload the concert footage onto them if you go to the booth after the show.

Some of you may know this but I’m not the only Without Annette alumnus to have been to a BNL concert within the past ten years. Alex literally received his nickname of Hair And Beard Combo (or HBC or Combo, for short) from the Barenaked Ladies when he was spotted in the audience during one of their shows. Nice work being hairy!

Alex “Combo” Wlasenko, who has been featured several times in the alumni section of this blog, is in the sketch troupe Atomic Vaudeville located in Victoria, BC. I had the pleasure of seeing their worst show ever, according to Alex, and it wasn’t that bad. In fact, I liked it. So just imagine how good they can be. Anywho, Alex sent me a link to this video of Bollywood Batman from the blog of Morgan’s No. 1 Fan. Enjoy!

Over the last weekend, our good friend Andrew finished 8th in Division 2 of the 2005 National Scrabble Championship in Reno, Nevada. Along the way, his game in Round 25 produced the Play of the Tournament.

Check out Stephen Fatsis’ (Word Freak) take on the game.

One of our alumni, Andrew Golding (on the left), is currently competing at the Canadian National Scrabble Championships. I’d like to publicly wish him all the best!

Who Are They Now?

Two alumni of Without Annette, Alex and Clare, have found a new home in Victoria, BC. There, they’ve been dazzling the Victorians as members of the local troupe, The Impromaniacs, and by troupe, I mean small army of roughly 25 members.

This post is simply an excuse to display these two pictures from the Impromaniac’s website.

Perfect!
