The Best Root Beer
About a year ago, I sponsored a root beer taste test, gathering the 8 root beers readily available in Montreal and forcing them upon 14 friends. For them, it was a chance to determine their favourite root beer; for me, it was a chance to count how many friends I had.

Here is the raw data (1 indicates first choice, 8 last choice. 14 people (columns), 8 beers (rows):
A&W________43534383733152
Mug________75275756515523
PC_________31423165257218
IGA________86847527648645
Barqs______58712644461761
Stewart’s__24361412124374
Cott_______12156831382437
Metro______67688278876886
The results were conclusive in that you can rank the drinks by having them face off head-to-head. For instance, 9/14 people ranked Stewart’s higher than PC, so it gets a higher overall ranking. And 8/14 people ranked PC higher than Cott, and so forth.
Without further ado, the rankings:
1.Stewart’s (also the most expensive)
2.President’s Choice (PC – available at Provigo)
3.Cott
4.A&W
5.Barq’s
6.Mug
7.Our Compliments (available at IGA, but terrible)
8.Merit Selection (available at Metro, but liquid vomit)
Since this root beer survey, no new root beers have come on the market, but many new friends have entered my life. Okay, maybe 1.

I have experienced over 100 root beers and have to state – that nothing tastes better that the original (not diet) A&W. Served in a frosty mug – never adding ace cubes, and it is a sweet tasting pleasure to ones senses. Fro shame that the A&W company does not bring back the days of yore where the drive in experience was available. I remember the days of the Decarie and Pare location and still have a mini kids mug as a memory. That plus a hand made, hand cut, hand battered and freshly friend order of inion rings and the day is done – as would be the calorie count… but worth it!
